The Copleston Maintaining Health Partnership was formed from the original Copleston Mental Health Project in the autumn of 2010. We are six therapists and some associate members. We have 14 years of experience in offering complementary therapies to people in and around Peckham, South East London. Where funding has permitted, we have provided free therapies to people suffering any level of mental illness – from fully diagnosed conditions to sleeplessness and anxiety.
Our aim has always been to offer people a chance to reconnect with their own systems and to become more aware of what is happening with their bodies and their minds. We have offered Reflexology, Massage, Indian Head Massage, Acupuncture and Homeopathy. We have also worked with Yoga, Pilates, Chi Kung, Breathwork and Overtone Sound Healing. We have hosted workshops on healthy eating, art workshops, weaving and singing and organised outings and days out to the countryside and places of beauty and interest.
Our experience has shown that although our clients benefit from all these forms of therapies, in order to re-balance themselves and move towards equilibrium, very few people can actually access them. Psychiatry has taken pharmaceutical medicine as the norm – to the exclusion of many other systems of healing which would not necessarily fit the medical model. We believe this to be a shortcoming of modern mental health care and we see our work as a small part in trying to fill an enormous gap left by modern psychiatric medicine.
We see people returning to a state where they are more in control of their health and wellbeing and where they can take steps away from being ‘victims’ of an illness. We see people living with more self-awareness, taking more responsibility for themselves and being more able to reflect on their situation and the choices they make.
